Close Call

Frenchie always makes fun of me because even when driving I’m constantly looking around.
Not much escapes my notice.
My “can’t miss a thing” attitude served me well this morning.
A cute and rather frightened deer bounded in front of my car.
Had I not been looking in that direction, I wouldn’t have stopped in time.

I slammed on the brakes.
My whole body tensed up.
I imagine the deer’s did too.
We looked at each other for a brief moment.
I tooted my horn to scare her back into the bushes and she complied.

My heart pounding, I drove off.
I cannot tell you how torn up I would have been if I’d hit that deer.
I’ve got a connection with them.
I would have been inconsolable.

Now my body is feeling the after effects.
I have neck problems to begin with and this has not been a good week.
My sudden tensing exacerbated matters considerably.
Too bad I can’t get high from the muscle relaxers I’m on.
Cause that would be a good way to spend the day.
:)

(No, it's not snowing in Canada right now. This is one of my favourite pics of my deer friends.)

I recently took a little road trip and passed maybe 30 dead deer on the side of the highway, sad. I'm always watching for them.

Applauds your vigilence

Don't butterflies have eyes in the side of their head?

WE have a lot of deer here in Calgary and they are always munching on the tall grass at the side of Deerfoot Trail (which is equivalent to the 400 or 401 in Ontario. I'm always so scared that they will bound into traffic and get killed. They truly are one of natures most beautiful animals.

I'm so glad you saw her, they are just so beautiful. I'm like you, never miss a thing and the Boy makes fun of me too. But it pays off....
Why not book yourself in for a massage??

I love the series of deer photos you did. You're so lucky to have been able to get so close to them. I would be a tragedy to hit one. So well done to you.

Whew! Close one. I have this fear of hitting a deer when I'm driving in the woods (which isn't too often these days) because I hit one once a few years back. It broke my heart. The poor thing.

I'm always happy to see your deer friends. And I had to laugh at your comment that it's not snowing in Canada right now. LOL!!

Oh no! Lucky you manged to stop. I hit a kangaroo a couple of months ago - it just bounded right in front of my car. I was so traumatised. It was awful.
